Project Overview
This bathroom renovation was completed in an English Tudor–style home in Pasadena that had previously been flipped, leaving behind a heavy, 1990s travertine tile aesthetic that felt disconnected from the character of the house.
The new homeowner wanted to rework the space into something that felt timeless and appropriate to the home’s original architecture — while significantly improving comfort, layout, and material quality. Cunningham Construction approached the project as a full rebuild, stripping the bathroom down to the studs in order to thoughtfully reconfigure the space from the inside out.
The Vision
The guiding principle for this renovation was respect for the home’s English Tudor roots.
Rather than introducing a purely modern bathroom, the goal was to create a space that felt as though it had always belonged — one defined by classic proportions, refined materials, and subtle detailing. The design needed to feel elegant and enduring, while incorporating modern comforts that support daily living.
Every design and construction decision was made with the intent of blending old-world character with contemporary performance.
The Work
To achieve this, the bathroom (with all of its 1990s travertine tile - as seen in pictures on the right) was fully stripped down to the framing, allowing plumbing to be relocated to support a new tub position, updated vanity layouts, and revised shower fixture locations.
Large-format 12 x 24 marble tile was installed as wall wainscoting, reinforcing a traditional architectural language while bringing scale and clarity to the space. The floor features green marble tile, anchored by a custom marble tile rug that adds visual interest without overwhelming the room.
A radiant floor warming system was installed beneath the marble flooring, adding comfort while remaining visually discreet.
Custom lacquer-finished cabinetry was built specifically for the space, providing generous storage while maintaining a furniture-like presence. The shower enclosure is defined by ½-inch Starfire ultra-clear glass, allowing the stonework and tile detailing to remain the focal point.
All plumbing fixtures were specified in polished chrome over brass, a finish choice that feels both classic and appropriate to the home’s period while offering durability and longevity.
The Results
The completed bathroom feels light, refined, and deeply connected to the home’s original character.
Natural light, soft finishes, and carefully detailed tilework come together to create a space that feels calm and welcoming. Modern upgrades — from the walk-in shower and radiant floors to the custom cabinetry — are seamlessly integrated without disrupting the architectural integrity of the home.
The result is a bathroom that feels timeless rather than trendy, balancing craftsmanship, comfort, and long-term livability.
