Project Overview

This primary bathroom remodel was completed in a 1990s-era Craftsman home located near the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. While the house itself was relatively modern, the goal of the project was to create a bathroom that felt timeless — one that honored the character and craftsmanship of a traditional Craftsman residence while significantly elevating the quality and experience of the space.

The remodel replaced a dated 1990s tile bathroom and basic Douglas fir cabinetry with a richly detailed, craft-forward design built around natural materials, custom millwork, and carefully integrated modern amenities.

The Vision

The vision for the bathroom was rooted in craftsmanship and restraint.

Rather than introducing a starkly modern aesthetic, the design focused on creating a space that felt as though it had always belonged in the home. Dark walnut cabinetry, green marble stone, and satin brass fixtures were selected to bring warmth, depth, and a sense of permanence — materials that feel appropriate to a classic Craftsman context.

Every new element needed to integrate seamlessly with the existing architecture of the house, respecting its scale, proportions, and detailing.

The Work

The remodel involved a complete reconfiguration and upgrade of the space.

Custom dark walnut cabinetry anchors the room, including a his-and-hers vanity, a dedicated linen cabinet, and a separate powder vanity. That powder vanity features etched and hand-painted pussy willow detailing on the glass — a custom detail designed to subtly mirror the window treatments and reinforce the overall design language of the room.

Stonework was a major focus of the project. Green marble countertops and marble wall tile were paired with a full walk-in shower featuring a linear drain, a floating marble bench, and a dedicated shaving sink. The marble floor includes a highly detailed, hand-painted tile “rug” pattern set between the vanities — a focal point that required precise layout and coordination.

All plumbing fixtures were specified in satin brass, adding warmth and contrast while maintaining a classic, understated finish. A separate toilet room was incorporated for privacy and function, further elevating the usability of the space.

Throughout construction, careful attention was paid to alignment, transitions, and detailing to ensure that every new element felt intentional and cohesive within the existing Craftsman home.

The Results

The finished bathroom feels rich, grounded, and quietly luxurious.

Natural stone, custom cabinetry, and finely detailed tilework come together to create a space that feels both elevated and deeply connected to the home’s architectural roots. Modern features — such as the walk-in shower, linear drain, and integrated storage — are seamlessly integrated without disrupting the traditional character of the house.

The result is a bathroom that feels timeless rather than trendy — a carefully crafted upgrade that enhances both the daily experience of the homeowners and the long-term integrity of the home.
